catbawse asked: In what sense is money 'in' politics?

I’m glad you asked this question.

my boss is fond of saying (non-ironically) “money is the mother’s milk of politics.” [am I the only one creeped out by the phrase “mother’s milk?]

In the United States, politicians, at all levels, often require significant funds to run for office. In this respect, the idea that money is necessary for public life, it is ‘in’ politics.

the sway that it holds over politicians is debateable though, and I want to give people the opportunity to peer into my vast knowledge on the subject in order to ground them in reality when critisizing the current system, or making judgements on how where money went determined an outcome.
