Someone alert Think Progress!Gays threaten the continuation of the human race, Libya’s delegate told a planning meeting of the UN Human Rights Council today, reported the Geneva-based UN Watch monitoring group. It was the first appearance in the 47-nation body by the post-Gaddafi government, whose membership was restored in November following Libya’s suspension in March.
Cue the deafening silence of the Liberal Left.
Okay - checking in.
Are you suggesting:
A. That this is a generally bad thing?
B. That we should “do something” about this?
C. That Barack Obama is responsible or what Libya’s apparatchiks state publicly?
I mean, with you on A. I think we’d both agree that interventionism isn’t always the best idea, so you aren’t saying B. And C seems a little silly, right?
Libya is free now, to the extent that it deposed a ruthless dictator with Western assistance. Then we left, and some fucked-up things are happening. But no one’s being killed, are they?
Here’s the simple standard: we need to offer asylum to persecuted people. Sometimes that means stopping Gaddafi from murdering them. Other times it means allowing Libyan gays entry into and haven within American territory, if this goes south and we start hearing about lynch mobs.
Not everything is going to be sunshine and roses in a place like Libya just because Gaddafi is gone. I don’t think anyone - including Obama - expected some great miracle. Part of Democracy is giving voice to bigots and demagogues, even occasionally putting them in power if the masses will it.
But not acting in Libya is just as loud a statement as acting. Death and upheaval is the consequence in either case. Isolate yourself if you want - that’s your position, fine - but don’t pretend like Barack Obama is responsible for persecuted Libyan gays like things were just peachy three years ago before America and the UN intervened. That criticism doesn’t stick.
Cue the deafening silence of the Liberal Left!
What is this even about?
