So assuming God does not extend divine retribution on the Republican Party and the citizens of Tampa by depositing Hurricane Isaac on their doorstep next week, convention season is upon us. The Republicans will meet in Tampa next week, and the Democrats in Charlotte — Poltiicalprof’s home town — the week following.

If any of you (of legal drinking age!) feel an uncontrollable desire to get unspeakably drunk at any point during either convention, let me suggest you play the “leadership” drinking game. Pick a night — any night but the “big” night when the candidate accepts the nomination — and simply take a drink every time you hear the word “leadership” from one of the speakers on the platform.

The word won’t mean anything. It won’t be attached to meaningful proposals or empirical examples. But so what? I promise: you’ll hear the word LEADERSHIP so often there’s no way you’ll be able to keep it up for more than an hour. Maybe two.
