Florida State University and the Koch Brothers

This piece of news is making the rounds in academe today. Charles Koch, one of the funders of the tea party movement, has made an agreement with the Department of Economics at Florida State University to endow two professorships. This, in and of itself, is not that big a deal: donors fund such positions all the time.

What makes this distinctive is that Koch has reserved the right to sign off on who gets the job. He also has insisted the Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged has to be used in one of the courses on business ethics.

This is a pretty big deal: Koch has an explicit agenda, and the means to enact it. I can see the day even now when I start each class with …

“This lecture brought to you by” …

Two professors, big deal. George Mason has two full institutes paid for by Koch brothers, Charles is even the Chairman of one of them.

This is a visibly-terrible example of something that’s already rampant and not really new, especially in economics,...

Just hit the front pages here in FL. Pretty outrageous how explicit their control over university hiring will be.
